Never has this saying been truer than in the case of Shannon Express. From its beginnings in 1978 - when nine or ten men gathered together to share their love of singing - to its present status as one of the UK's leading amateur choirs, never has that initial feeling of fun and friendship left the chorus. Amateur maybe but definitely not 'amateurish'. Singing is our hobby and the enjoyment that this brings is manifest in all our performances be they in small churches in the wilds of Bedfordshire, the Royal Albert Hall or venues in Europe and the USA Weekly rehearsals require dedication and commitment especially from those members who travel long distances. Ages range from teenagers to more senior citizens, while a mix of backgrounds and musical ability all add to the hubbub before the pitch pipe blows and the chorus comes to order under the direction of Roger Chantrelle. Then the chords ring and the emotions take over. Since its inception Shannon Express has recorded significant achievements in the world of Barbershop notably as gold medal winners in 1995 and 1998 as Chorus Champions at annual convention and twice representing Great Britain at international level in the USA. More recently Shannon has continued in contention in the highly competitive world of performance singing with a creditable 5th place at the Harrogate Convention of 2006. The chorus has maintained this standard in the 2007 event at Scarborough where, despite slipping to eighth position in the chorus table, our all important points score has remained virtually unchanged. See the Chorus News and Events page for more details about the Club's activities. |
